OCTOBER
by Elvira Green
The lovely, bright, and perfect days
Of October now are here,
With all their gathered golden wealth
For the crowning of the year.
The promises of May and June,
With their leafy buds and flowers,
You have fulfilled abundantly,
Through sunshine, shade, and showers.
All the perfumes of the seasons
You have gathered in your fruits;
All the colors of Flora's kingdom
Are woven in their suits.
Every tree in the old, old forests
Has put on its tinted leaves,
In honor of your coming
With your bright and golden sheaves.
While time turns his lunar circles
That the changing seasons bring,
Among these loyal subjects you
Will ever be crowned their king.
